Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri is hopeful star forward Dries Mertens might be passed fit to play against Actual Madrid on Tuesday.
Mertens scored twice in Saturday’s impressive 2-1 Serie A win at title rivals Roma, taking his tally for an impressive season to 22 in all competitions.
The Belgium international had to be replaced for the final 16 minutes at Stadio Olimpico right after grabbing his ankle, but Sarri thinks the issue was only muscle cramps, despite the fact that he will not know for sure till the players have already been assessed.
“Mertens is fine – I consider there was only a suggestion of cramps, but we are going to assess him superior [before the game] in conjunction with the rest of your squad,” the Napoli head coach mentioned at his pre-match media conference.
Sarri is unhappy with all the busy run of fixtures his side have had about a essential Champions League last-16 tie, which they trail 3-1 in the away leg.
He continued: “I do not want controversy, but the calendar certainly has not helped us. I’ve under no circumstances noticed a lot of crucial matches pushed with each other.
“Certainly, from this point of view, it could be improved. You understand who tends to make the Champions League and a few factors had been not taken into account inside the calendar to shield Italian teams in Europe.”
